£500 ANGEL GRANT AWARDED FOR BULGARIAN CATS

PROBLEM: "I’m a small independent safe haven for abused and unwanted cats in a tiny village in the middle of Bulgaria. I feed and care for 55 cats daily - most are indoor outdoor cats, some reside 100% in my garden where I have shelters for them, and some are unowned cats who arrive for breakfast and stay through dinner and then leave. My ‘Soup Kitchen’ is available 24/7 365 days a year for any cat that needs a meal or medical help or a place to call home. I neuter every cat that crosses my threshold or that I see in my neighbourhood, because here, poverty is extreme and most villagers are pensioners who exist on around 150 euro a month.

"Which is why today, a villager appeared at my gate saying she had been told by a neighbour I could help her. Kalinka told me she had taken in a stray cat last year and in July it had given birth to 5 kittens ...one had sadly died but the four remaining females were still with her together with the mother. There is literally nothing offered for cats here who also, unlike dogs, have no legal protection. There is no national charity for animals in Bulgaria, there are no shelters of grants or awards or government support. Anyway, Kalinka wants to do the right thing and get the cats fixed before there’s an explosion of kittens… I cannot not help her to do the right thing. So I need help… Is it possible that you could please consider assisting me?" (Sarah's Street Cat Soup Kitchen)

SOLUTION: £500 Angel Grant awarded. How could we possibly say no?

RESULT: "Hi Amanda, Thank you once again for helping me make this happen... Mother and 4 female kittens all fixed and so much potential future needless suffering avoided. I've attached all the photos of the kitties and their elderly carer, Kalinka, as she collected the final cat from me. To say what has been achieved has done a great deal for cross-cultural diplomacy is an understatement. I told her about your organisation and she was amazed that 'foreigners' would care to help more than many Bulgarians. And with the remaining funds from your award, I purchased food and litter - receipts and photo attached."
